The politics of employability

April 15th, 2008 by Vidya & Sanchita

People may think that I am obsessed with this word”employability”. True, I am to a great extent. The reasons being that I see this action of employment from many angles.

As a HR professional, as someone attached with academics, as a mother of growing children and of all as a concerned individual.

My brother once said,” I am leaving for the US only to come back”. The question we asked was “when?”

Now when he is reminded of the question, as are many of my friends, the answer is,”I am not sure if my children will fit into the education and employment scene in India”.

Things are sure changing, but the direction is oscillating between the advanced industrial growth and politics of inclusive development.

While we all recognize the need to bring all sections of India into the development angle, we may need to also recognize the fact that we have to develop and not simply promote our people.

Already there are cases where the organizations have begun putting filters to sieve out performers and learners from the rest. Imagine, in a few years from now we will have IITians and IIMians at almost thrice the number that we currently have. And realize that there will be a sudden jerk for many of these people when they face the demands of selection.

Adding to my previous post on employability, may I now feel my concern is compounded by “quality” times more?
